Portland, Oregon (August 10, 2023)— John's Marketplace with their friends at Point Blank Distributing, Maui Brewing and other area businesses, recognize the recent fires have had a significant impact on Maui. They have affected the local community and the businesses and livelihoods of many. The challenges posed by homelessness and the displacement of individuals due to the fires add to the existing struggles faced by the people of Maui. The anticipated impact on tourism and the subsequent effect on hospitality workers further compound the difficulties.
John’s Marketplace established a GoFundMe account to raise money to benefit Ka Hale A Ke Ola (KHAKO) Homeless Resource Centers, Inc. in Maui. They are an established nonprofit working for more than 30 years in Lahaina and the West side. Their mission is dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness. They serve the needs of the homeless and hungry on Maui by providing emergency food and housing, voicing their concerns, and empowering them to take responsibility for their own lives. https://www.khako.org/
The people on the West Coast understand the devastation caused by wildfires and share a sense of empathy and solidarity for communities facing similar challenges. The interconnectedness and sense of "Ohana" or family spirit transcends geographical boundaries.
